INTRODUCTION

1.1.        Background
Global warming is when the earth heats up (the temperature rises).  It happens when greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, water vapor, nitrous oxide, and methane) trap heat and light from the sun in the earth’s atmosphere, which increases the temperature.  This hurts many people, animals, and plants.  Many cannot take the change, so they die.

1.2.        Objectives
The objectives of the paper is:
a.    One of the prerequisite of national exam.
b.    To explain the effect of global warming
c.    To know the ways to prevent global warming

1.3.        Problem
The problems of the paper are:
a.    What is global warming?
b.    What is causes global warming?
c.    What is the effect of global warming?
d.    How to stop global warming?

1.4.        Data Accumulation
The method used in data finding is literature method: colletinf data using related sources.

CHAPTER II

2.1.  THE GLOBAL WARMING CAUSE
Many things cause global warming.  One thing that causes global warming is electrical pollution.  Electricity causes pollution in many ways, some worse than others.  In most cases, fossil fuels are burned to create electricity.  Fossil fuels are made of dead plants and animals.  Some examples of fossil fuels are oil and petroleum.  Many pollutants (chemicals that pollute the air, water, and land) are sent into the air when fossil fuels are burned.  Some of these chemicals are called greenhouse gasses.
We use these sources of energy much more than the sources that give off less pollution.  Petroleum, one of the sources of energy, is used a lot.  It is used for transportation, making electricity, and making many other things.  Although this source of energy gives off a lot of pollution, it is used for 38% of the United States’ energy.
Some other examples of using energy and polluting the air are:
a.      Turning on a light
b.      Waching TV
c.      Listening to a stereo
d.      Washing or drying clothes
e.      Using a hair dryer
f.       Riding in a car
g.      Heating a meal in the microwave
h.     Using an air conditioner
i.       Playing a video game
j.        Using a dish washer
When you do these things, you are causing more greenhouse gasses to be sent into the air.  Greenhouse gasses are sent into the air because creating the electricity you use to do these things causes pollution.  If you think of how many times a day you do these things, it’s a lot.  You even have to add in how many other people do these things!  That turns out to be a lot of pollutants going into the air a day because of people like us using electricity. The least amount of electricity you use, the better.
When we throw our garbage away, the garbage goes to landfills.  Landfills are those big hills that you go by on an expressway that stink.  They are full of garbage.  The garbage is then sometimes burned.  This sends an enormous amount of greenhouse gasses into the air and makes global warming worse.
Another thing that makes global warming worse is when people cut down trees.  Trees and other plants collect carbon dioxide (CO2), which is a greenhouse gas.
Carbon dioxide is the air that our body lets out when we breathe. With fewer trees, it is harder for people to breathe because there is more CO2 in the air, and we don’t breathe CO2, we breathe oxygen.  Plants collect the CO2 that we breathe out, and they give back oxygen that we breathe in.  With less trees and other plants, such as algae, there is less air for us, and more greenhouse gases are sent into the air. This means that it is very important to protect our trees to stop the greenhouse effect, and also so we can breathe and live.
This gas, CO2, collects light and heat (radiant energy), produced by the sun, and this makes the earth warmer.  The heat and light from the sun is produced in the center of the sun.  (The sun has layers just like the earth.)

2.2. THE EFFECT OF GLOBAL WARMING
Global warming is affecting many parts of the world.  Global warming makes the sea rise, and when the sea rises, the water covers many low land islands.  This is a big problem for many of the plants, animals, and people on islands.  The water covers the plants and causes some of them to die.  When they die, the animals lose a source of food, along with their habitat.  Although animals have a better ability to adapt to what happens than plants do, they may die also.  When the plants and animals die, people lose two sources of food, plant food and animal food.  They may also lose their homes.  As a result, they would also have to leave the area or die.  This would be called a break in the food chain, or a chain reaction, one thing happening that leads to another and so on.

2.3. THE WAYS TO PREVENT GLOBAL WARMING
a.  Plant Trees and Bamboo
Trees are a major opponent to global warming because they use the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to create oxygen. Therefore, the more trees that are planted, the more a person can prevent global warming. In addition, try planting fast growing plants such as bamboo. Bamboo actually creates 30% more oxygen than a tree, therefore preventing global warming exponentially.
b.  Ride a Bike
Carpooling with friends is great for reducing carbon dioxide gases in the air. However, if a person really wants to prevent global warming, riding a bike is the very best option. A bike gets a person where they need to go without the need or use of gasoline. In addition to getting healthier, riding a bike reduces carbon dioxide emissions dramatically, which helps to prevent global warming.
c.  Buy Less Stuff
When a person chooses not to buy more stuff, they are choosing to not fill landfills with more junk. Everyone knows that when stuff is bought, other stuff must be thrown away to make room for the new items. Choosing to not buy is making a more environmentally friendly decision that will not only affect a person’s wallet, but also prevent future carbon dioxide emissions in landfills.
d.  Get a Tune Up
If you must have a car, then be sure to get a tune up done to ensure the car is running at optimal levels. In addition, make sure tires are inflated to recommended amounts. These two things alone will help reduce the amount of fuel required to drive the car and ensure car emissions are reduced as much as possible. Thus, this reduces the carbon footprint and prevents further global warming.
e.  Buy in Bulk Rather Than Individually Packaged
Buying items or groceries in bulk rather than buying individually wrapped items can dramatically reduce the amount of packaging that goes into landfills, thereby preventing global warming. In addition, when going to the grocery store, be sure to carry reusable grocery bags, which further prevent a plethora of plastic grocery bags from ending up in the landfills as well.
f.    Do Not Invest in a Hybrid
Contrary to popular belief, hybrid cars may be better for the environment in terms of gas usage, but the production of these cars creates a large carbon footprint, which increases global warming. If your current car is still in excellent working condition and does not use a large amount of gas on a weekly basis, it may be better to stick with the older car for a little while longer.
g.  Combine All Trips into One
Driving a car is probably one of the largest contributors to global warming. Therefore, it would benefit the environment and a person’s wallet to try to combine all errands into one trip. This way, the person is conserving gas, creating fewer emissions, and getting all their errands done in a short amount of time. In addition, running errands with a friend can help prevent even more emissions that cause global warming.
h.  Reduce Air Travel or Choose Non-Stop Flights
Air travel, in addition to car travel, is one of the biggest contributors to global warming. If a person is able to reduce the number of flights taken per year, they can dramatically reduce their carbon footprint and prevent further global warming. In addition, if choosing not to fly is not an option, try choosing non-stop flights, which create less emissions because the planes are not starting and stopping more frequently.
i.    Adjust the Thermostat by Two Degrees
The use of electricity to heat and cool a home is a major contributor to global warming. However, by adjusting the thermostat by two degrees more in the summer (higher) and in the winter (lower), one can drastically reduce the amount of emissions produced from heating and cooling a home. This will not only help prevent global warming, but also save additional money.
j.    Use a Full Dishwasher and Washer
When cleaning dishes, make sure the dishwasher is completely full. The dishwasher will use the same amount of energy on every wash, whether it is full or only partially full. Ensuring the dishwasher is completely full will cut down on extra washes and allow the energy consumed by the dishwasher to be used at full capacity. In addition, also ensure the washing machine is full prior to washing laundry.
CLOSING

3.1.        CONCLUSION
Global warming is serious problem for us. Many things can make global warming and most of them are a result of human. To avoid global warming we need hard work. Global warming is really difficult to overcome. But we can reduce the effect of global warming.

3.2.        SUGGESTION
As we know, global warming is serious problem for us. But we should reduce the course of global warming. We must avoid the causes of global warming and doing something to reduce the effect of global warming and STOP GLOBAL WARMING.
